methods and tests

research has shown that body composition is directly related to health.

A normal balance of body fat to lean body mass is associated with good health and longevity.  Excess fat in relation to lean body mass, a condition known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and more.  BIA (Bio Impedance Analysis) enables early detection of an improper balance in your body composition which allows for earlier intervention and prevention.  BIA also provides the measurement of fluid and body mass that can be a critical assessment tool for your current state of health.

BIA also serves to measure your progress as you work to improve your health.  Improving your BIA measurement, or maintaining a healthy BIA measurement, can help keep your body functioning properly for healthy ageing and reduce risk to illness.  With your BIA results, we can recommend a personalised exercise, nutritional and lifestyle plan to help support optimal health and well-being for a lifetime.

how does BIA work?

BIA is a simple procedure that could be performed in our fully equipped studio at your home or work premises in a matter of minutes with the help of a sophisticated computerised analysis.  The analyser calculates your tissue and fluid compartments using an imperceptible electrical current passed through pads placed on one hand and foot as you lie comfortably on a mat.  In just minutes you will have very accurate measurements to help create an effective personalised programme to prove your health status.

V02 maximal oxygen uptake

VO2 max, or maximum oxygen consumption, is an index of physical fitness and a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen that the body can utilise during exercise. Generating the energy needed in the muscles during exercise requires oxygen. Transporting oxygen from the outside air to the muscles involves the integrated function of several parts of the body, including the lungs, heart, blood, blood vessels, and the muscles which are the engines that produce the energy to do the physical work. Regular physical activity increases the body's ability to transport and utilize oxygen. This results in improved exercise tolerance and VO2 max, reflecting better fitness and aerobic capacity.

VO2 max graph

As exercise intensity increases so does oxygen consumption. However, a point is reached where exercise intensity can continue to increase without the associated rise in oxygen consumption. To understand this in more practical terms, take a look at the diagram above.

balke treadmill test

(active, sedentary clients)

The client walks on a treadmill to exhaustion. At timed stages during the test the grade of slope (%) of the treadmill is increased.

V02 treadmill test

(endurance athletes)

The athlete runs on a treadmill to exhaustion. At timed stages during the run the slope of the treadmill is increased.

bleep test

The test is made up of 23 levels where each level lasts approximately one minute. Each level comprises of a series of 20m shuttles where the starting speed is 8.5km/hr and increases by 0.5km/hr at each level.

The athlete must place one foot on or beyond the 20m marker at the end of each shuttle If the athlete arrives at the end of a shuttle before the beep, the athlete must wait for the beep and then resume running. The athlete keeps running for as long as possible until he/she can longer keep up with the speed set by the CD at which point they should voluntarily withdraw. If the athlete fails to reach the end of the shuttle before the beep they should be allowed 2 or 3 further shuttles to attempt to regain the required pace before being withdrawn. Record the level and number of shuttles completed at that level by the athlete. At the end of the test the athletes conduct a cool down program, including static stretching exercises.
